Licence
Brainitive is open source: all of the code is public on GitHub, and you may read it, change it and run it on your own server. It is licensed under the Business Source License 1.1 (BSL). This page explains what that means in practice. The licence text itself is what counts.
Free to self-host
You can self-host Brainitive for free, also in production and for your business, if:
- your organization has less than €2 million annual revenue. Group companies count together: a small subsidiary of a large group uses the group's revenue.
- or you use it personally, as a registered non-profit or as an educational institution. Revenue doesn't matter then.
Every feature is included. There are no user limits and no licence key.
Agencies and IT contractors
You may install, configure and run Brainitive for a client, on the client's behalf. The free limit is checked against the client's revenue, not yours.
When you need a commercial licence
- Your organization has €2 million or more annual revenue and uses Brainitive in production, self-hosted or not.
- You offer Brainitive, or a service based on it, to others as a hosted, managed or subscription service, for example a site where anyone can sign up and create their own workspaces. That competes with Brainitive Cloud and isn't allowed without a licence, whatever your revenue.
Testing, development and evaluation are always free. For a commercial licence, write to hello@brainitive.app.
Every version becomes AGPL-3.0
Four years after a version is released, that version is also available under the GNU AGPL-3.0, a classic open-source licence without the conditions above.
Versions up to and including 1.45.3 were released under the AGPL-3.0 and stay available under it. The Business Source License applies from version 1.46.0.
